Chongqing is one of the major cities in China that is directly controlled by the government and it has one of the best histories too.  The municipality of Chongqing was created on March 14, 1997 and it had control over a large portion of China with an area of 82,401 km².  It is larger than any other city in China like Beijing or Shanghai and it can even be considered as the largest in the world.  This is because the land size covered by Chongqing and the number of people living in it is greater than any other city in the world.  Chongqing also has its share in the history of China as a lot of remarkable things have happened in the city in the past.

Chongqing used to be called Yuzhou during the 4th century BC.  It was the capital of Ba which is well-known for their men with very impressive military skills.  The city’s name was changed due to the enthronement of their emperor known as Zhaodun and the name was changed to Chongqing.  This meant “double celebration” because not only were they celebrating Zhaodun being the emperor but they were also celebrating his princedom.  This brought joy to a lot of people in Chongqing.

Chongqing was a very important part of China in terms of commerce even back in the days where the means of communications and transport had not yet been improved.  The Yangtze River passes through Chongqing and a lot of people bring their goods to Chongqing by boat.  There are a lot of Chinese movies where we get to see people travel along rivers with boats and they try to buy food like vegetables with the help of their boat.  This vision fits perfectly when you think about how you would envision Chongqing in the past when there was no form of hi-tech equipment like engines to power their boats.  People also used to travel by land to get to Chongqing so that they could trade their goods.  There were many other things that people considered precious back then and they would trade it for the things that they would need to survive.  After many years, Chongqing became an international trade route and foreigners would go to Chongqing with the intent to trade for their goods and to try and get good deals.

Chongqing used to have a very high wall back in the day but it was destroyed during the Sino-Japanese war.  Chongqing was badly damaged because the capital was moved from Nanjing to Chongqing and this made Chongqing one of the main targets of the Japanese bombings.  Chongqing was lucky though because the entire city was not devastated because of how foggy the place is.  The Japanese had a hard time accurately dropping their bombs which somewhat prevented Chongqing’s total annihilation.

The city of Chongqing is also known as the “City of Heroes” because of the millions of people who risked and lost their lives fighting the war.  Chongqing was badly damaged through out World War II and the people never gave up.  They kept on fighting for their freedom and they were eventually victorious when the Second World War ended.
